How Do Photochromic Lenses Work?

Photochromic lenses contain special chemical compounds (typically silver halide molecules) that react to UV light. When exposed to UV radiation outdoors, these molecules change structure and darken the lens. When you move indoors and away from UV light, the reaction reverses and the lens gradually clears.

The process is:

• Darkening time: roughly 30–60 seconds in bright sunlight
• Clearing time: approximately 2–3 minutes when returning indoors
• Darkness level: comparable to light or medium sunglasses (not as dark as dedicated sunglasses)
